The obvious benefit of Karate is learning an ancient martial art using EMPTY HANDS to defend yourself.

Whilst the general benefits such as fitness, meeting like-minded people, feeling part of a team and develop a sense of belonging somewhere, other benefits specifically to children and adults are listed below.

The benefits are not exclusive or listed in any order of importance as it varies from person to person what they take from karate.

1. Bow before entering and leaving the dojo.

2. Address your instructor as Sensei whilst in the Dojo.

3. Respect those with higher ranks than you and listen to their advice!

4. Always reply by saying ‘Oss’ when addressed by your instructor or other senior grades.

5. Other situations where you must use ‘Oss’ as means of addressing or responding include:

a. At the beginning and end of each lesson from either Seiza or standing Rei.
b. At the beginning and end of each sparring session with your partner.
c. On courses, gradings and during competitions there specific places/times you are expected to say ‘oss’. You will be given advice and guidance on this during your training with us.

6. Guide, protect and teach those with lower ranks than yourself.

7. Your karate gi must be kept clean and in good condition and is a sign of
   self-respect if adhered to.

8. Ensure nails are kept clean and short (including toenails).

9. If you have been injured, or have injured anybody in class, please stay behind to complete the accident form.

10. Keep trying even if it’s difficult, hard or painful or even when you think it’s boring.

11. Do not arrive late for class. If you do, wait until you are called into the class. You are expected to come to the front of the class where you must kneel in seiza position and bow to the instructor before you will be given permission to join in

12. Remove ALL jewellery before training as it may pose a health hazard to you and others and can also be damaged. If you cannot remove earrings or rings
           please cover them with plaster or surgical tape.

13. Do not leave the lesson without permission. (So please go to the toilet before you enter the dojo!)

14. Parents and spectators are welcome provided they keep quiet and do not distract karateka (trainee’s).


15. You must NEVER behave in any way that will bring the club into disrepute or  offend the etiquette of Karate-do.

16. ALWAYS remember, KARATE, is more than the ability to fight; it is also the development of character, and mutual respect.
